For a class project, computer-engineering college kids built a system that tracks body movements using a camera and a colored vest, mapping them to a Space Invaders-type game that requires you to jump to shoot.

You become the controller in the classic game, which is deliberately intended to promote cardiovascular health: There's a sensor that tracks heart rate and sends it to the game component, where it, in theory, it could be used "to vary game speed and difficulty." The only sad part about this is that the original game was intended to be Pong, which would've been potentially more of a two-player, and thus more dangerous, thing.

In spite of all this new interaction—and a respectable effort of of building and programming put forth by by the three dudes, Clarkson University juniors Allen, Doug and Matt—the object of the game is still quite simple. As you can hear someone tell the vested Allen in the (unintentionally?) hilarious video on Matt's website, "We fixed it. Now don't die."

Finally, after a few iTunes syntax errors, the Invaders have Rocky’s new Christmas time podcast up on the Stone Groove channel. It’s a nice little electro, glitch, synth, whatever the kids are calling it now-a-days, 22 minute romp through memorable tunes.

Dancing under the cold moonlight

It was great Stone Groove weekend! For those of you that do not know, the Invaders moved the Stone Groove party to the Daily Dose this past weekend after a falling out with the previous venue. For a moment there it was not certain that the party would even happen. Luckily, for us, the owner of Daily Dose allowed for us to have the party at her establishment.

To simply put it, it was awesome! Flatbroke and I did a full set up outside with the 12 foot screen, and even had a screen behind us. There was a fire going to keep people warm but there was no need because Flatbroke brought the heat! (He even dropped Fishbone into the mix, flawlessly might I add.) Even if it was a little chilly outside, people got down under the moonlight.

I was very surprised of the turnout with basically only one day of letting people know that we had to change the location to the Dose. The cool thing was that people were coming in from the bars across the street to party, people were really just chilling with us and it seemed like with some people we were all old acquaintances. And that’s really what the core idea is behind the Stone Groove party. It’s just a party for people to come out to and chill with friends and listen to good music. Personally, I want to throw the next one there.

For those who have not already done so, go have lunch or dinner at the Dose. Their wraps are great and they will fill you up, but not in that gross, I need to take a nap after eating, sort of way.

Journey to the Center of My Vinyl pt. 1 of ???

Every so often, the stars and planets will align in a manner that affects my severe vinyl record hoarding disorder and will actually allow me to sort through the massive mounds of lacquer and part ways with a few pieces. For those that are DJ’s, know DJ’s, collect vinyl, or just have a severe disorder to hoard anything, then you know how difficult it is to part with anything in your collection. To give you an idea of the internal struggle that takes place when going through a DJ’s head when deciding to keep or get rid of vinyl, please read this example monologue:

“Well Mrs. Ashley Simpson, I have a lot of distain for, if you call it, music. I know I will never let your L.O.V.E. vinyl single touch my 12’s at home much less play on the decks of a public venue. After your Milli Vanilli style downfall, it just confirms you are a hack and that your guttural off key vocal vibratos should be erased from the annuls of human history.” (Places vinyl in the keep pile.)

As you can see it’s a difficult challenge to part with vinyl. Anyway, on to the vinyl:

Yep, I found that in my collection. This cover will definitely make that creepy, old man, that has a crush on Chris, from the Family Guy purr with content. I’m kind of embarrassed by finding this. I don’t really remember how I got this record, but I know for certain that I dislike the song. Into the go pile with you.

The Best of Dick Purdan

I actually do remember finding this in a Goodwill store. I was thinking, “Radio show DJ with funny looking scenarios on the back. Should have something sample-able in it.” Thought it could have been at least something like Bob and Tom. But I was wrong. Not funny, nor anything sample-able on it. Hell, I don’t even know who Dick Purtan is.

Herbie Hancock Mega-Mix (w/ Rockit)

Hell yeah!!! Forgot about this little gem. This single features a great nine minute extended version of Herbie Hancock’s – Rockit. (As if the nearly five and a half minute version wasn’t enough.) I remember finding this in a thrift store among a few Leaf Garret albums. I also remember being scared of the music video as a kid, but enthralled by D.ST.’s scratching. Definitely a keeper.

101 Golden Nursery Songs

My children need to know what vinyl is, plain and simple. It’s also pretty cool that there literally are 101 of these little bastards on one piece of vinyl. I didn’t even know that even at least 101 nursery rhymes existed. Keeper.

Kool Moe Dee - Wild Wild West

You would think that a 12” single from one of the early pioneer’s of rap I would really want to keep this. But for some reason I just don’t really want to, but I also don’t want to get rid of it either. I’m stuck, I know I’ll never play this song live or will it be in any iTunes playlist I have. I don’t know, stuck in the middle. Also, I think those are the same boots Moe Dee wore in Graffiti Rock.

Madonna - Like A Virgin (Full Album)

If you go to any cheesy so called 80’s nights in cities and towns across America, or into any of the City Market bars of Charleston on any given night, you will hear something from this album. I will never play anything from this album, but none of the less, I can’t part with it. I don’t know what it is, I want to throw it out, but I can’t let go of it.

First off, I’m down with spelling your artist name all funky to build an image and help you sell some records. But when it’s so ghetto spelled that you need to translate it to non-regional English, then it may be time to rethink that name. Then on top of it your label, Ophir, also needs that same translation (pronounced Oh-Fear) you may want to rethink signing with them. I mean these translations are written right on the label. Anyway, as you can guess, this is really ghetto, and won’t play it. Got it from the record pool I used to belong too.

The art of break dancing and dance battles may be attributed to the early hip hop movement in the South Bronx, but from what I’ve seen, it has expanded exponentially over the past 30 years. At the Future Sound of Breaks tour that recently came to Charleston, young locals came and conquered the dance floor at the Music Farm. Nowadays, those who showcase the immense strength and stamina of the b-boy give props to their hip hop ancestors, but also get down to rave-like break beats, and new-school club music.
When I arrived at the steps of the Music Farm, there was a strong scent of spray paint in the air, and lined up across the railings outside were rows of wooden boards where live artists showed off their talents with graffiti. There was not much to see just yet, as the artists had just begun. The music was booming out of the venue, so much it could be heard over a block away. I thought this might be a lamer version of Kulture Klash, but it turned out to be a very different thing altogether. (Cont. after Joshua Curry’s pic)

I was surprised to see that the crowd was small when I first arrived. The majority of the audience for the first stage of the dance battle were the dancers themselves, plus me and a few other friends videotaping. I was pretty ignorant to the fact that we have so many amazing dancers in Charleston, but the things I saw on the dance floor blew my mind. The dancers had rhythm like James Brown or Michael Jackson, with the athleticism of an Olympic gymnast. Each DJ offered different variations of dance music, and didn’t just stick to hip hop. By the last round, the crowd had grown to maybe four times its original size, and the dancers were putting on their A-game.
I ended up leaving before the winners were announced, but I honestly didn’t want to know. I liked every crew. Every dancer had their own style that made them unique on the floor. As I walked out, the graffiti was finished. Within a few hours, the artists had created some of the coolest street art I have seen in a while. I would have bought some if it were on sale. This event was one-of-a-kind. To know that there are people in Charleston with that kind of passion and talent make me proud to live in this city. — Kelly Stroup

So, I went to Game Stop last night at midnight to pick up Fallout 3. I have never been to one of those game release things before, but what I can tell you is that you really are not missing too much. They give everyone a ticket, a few gamers argue over games, small skirmishes breakout over release date posters, you know the norm. Anyway, got my collectors edition. It came in a cool looking oldschool metal lunch box, has a making of Fallout 3 DVD, a Fallout 3 concept art book (which looks awesome by the way) and this cool Vault Boy bobble head. Now if it only came with some extra time in the day so I could install it and actually play it, I’d be set.

What can I possibly say about Dr. King’s Halloween bash except for, it was awesome! It was in freakin sane! You would think that with 1500+ people out somewhere with booze just freely distributed there would be some douche that gets blitz and starts something. Nope, not at all. Nothing but a good time. Big thanks to the people that went. You all made this one of the best gigs the Spaced Invaders ever played. There were times that Flatbroke would be on the decks and I would grab the mic and tell people to get their hands up, and as far back as I could see, people would throw their hands in the air. The Rogue Dynamic Productions crew were out in full effect and gave the crowd some awesome acrobatics, and even gave me a shot with the hoola hoops. And people really put a lot of work and effort into costumes as well. I don’t recall seeing any repeats of any costumes. Big thanks to Big Hair /Green Light Productions for having us out there and Dr. King for throwing this wicked bash. Also, thanks to Gustavo of B’Zar, who at 5:30 in the morning stuck around and helped us load up, after his wife Andrea and him danced for hours.

I spent all Sunday recovering. I will try to have more pictures up from this in a bit.

I’m not a political person by any means. And according to all the “what political affiliation tests are you” that I have found online, I’m a radical, so I don’t try and judge to much by what I see in political ads or what the media wants me to see, but as I was walking out the door this morning I saw this Lindsay Graham ad:

I felt kind of offended when I saw that. I mean Graham has all these white folks in powerful positions, were in powerful positions, or were honored veterans on there supporting him for office. They then show this one black dude, that was not offensive to me, but he resembled almost the whole black-faced image, was not too well spoken, had a lazy eye, and was just a sergeant in the military. That is what is offensive to me. The context in which this man was placed was offensive to me. I don’t want to state that Graham is racist or any bs like that because I personally don’t know. But I just can’t help but to feel offended by this. If anyone would shed some light on this for me that would be helpful.

This podcast has been dubbed the Electronic Funds Transfer to keep it tied in with the whole payday theme. The music reminds me of the real underground New Wave stuff of the 80’s.
