Spaced Invaders to drop the funk at the Best of Charleston Party

Author: Sonar  //  Category: Just Blogging, Music, Upcoming Events

So it appears that Sonar was the only one in Charleston who has never heard of the Charleston City Paper’s – Best of Charleston Party. For those as clueless to the event as I was, every year the Charleston City Paper throws a big party-concert for all the winners of the Best of Charleston awards. The attendees usually top in the early thousands. The folks at the City Paper have asked the Spaced Invaders to do fills in between each band, as well as do visuals for all them. That was really cool of them! However, the party is special invite only and this year they are only giving out 25 tickets to the public. This is straight from the City Paper website showing you how to snag one:

OK kids, we’ve got 25 pairs of tickets to give away for our annual Best of Charleston party on March 4. This year’s party will be held at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. ballpark (yeah, that’s the big baseball stadium by the Citadel). It starts at 6:30 and goes to 9 p.m.

We’re mixing things up this year, so to get free tickets you’ve got to prove you want ‘em. To enter, upload a photo of yourself with a mustache to your profile on this site. Leave a comment at the bottom of this page and we’ll choose 25 winners out of all the profile pictures on Monday afternoon. Funny wins. Clever wins. Searching Google for “mustache” and grabbing the first image you find LOSES.
NOTE: We will notify winners through the e-mail address listed on your profile. If it’s not valid, or you don’t check it, you won’t get the notice!

That’s from the horse’s mouth right there. Other than that I really cannot tell you much more about it. Truth is, I really don’t know much more than that. I’m supposed to meet up with the folks from City Paper and the production company sometime today to see how we’re all going to set up for Wednesday. I’ll post something else up when I know more. But until that time, get your moustache on!

Suite Soul March 09 Sneaker Release Party

Author: Sonar  //  Category: Just Blogging, Upcoming Events

Suite Sole is dropping some new sneakers this weekend, and you know what that means, party up in the store! Seriously though, their parties are always a good time. On top of that you’ve got our boys Birdflu and Hunter dropping tracks both at the Suite Soul party as well as at Walter’s Birthday Party at the Recovery Room. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it to the Suite Soul party because of Capoeira Charleston’s Brazil Bash (which I’ll get to in a moment) but if you are in the downtown area you might want to stop by at both events.

$5 Door Charge goes to the Boys & Girls Club of the Trident Area – Shaw Unit.

On the first Saturday of every month for the last year, Charleston’s only video turntablist crew “The Spaced Invaders” has broken out some big toys to draw crowds to their monthly party, “The Stone Groove.”  Setting up 15 foot projection screens and massive sound systems powered by turntable controlled laptops has drawn both good and bad attention to the party, easily visible (and audible) from Folly Road.

With the new positive energy flowing through the country, they’ve decided for 2009 its time to use their fan base and unique geek-chic style to benefit a different charity every month – beginning this month with The Trident Area Shaw Unit Boys & Girls Club of America, who has been receiving a lack of funds do to the current financial state of the economy.

Attendees are treated to something very special, a wild visual display of classic music videos, remixed and scratched movies with just plain silly antics combined with the 60’s and 70’s soul songs that were used to create the 90’s hip hop sound that is so rarely heard today.  “I looked up to see 50 people staring at the huge screen, nodding their heads with the music” states VJ Scrunchyface Flatbroke, one of the Spaced Invaders.  “It was the same mesmerizing look you see when you put a toddler in front of a TV!”

“The Stone Groove party at the Daily Dose is like partying with your closest friends in another friends’ back yard…Just with giant video screens and some good mood food,” says, VJ Sonar, another member of the Spaced Invaders. “Now teaming up with local charities, we have something people can look forward to going to, have a good time, and feel good about giving back to the community. It’s really a party with a purpose.”
